Early detection is key to identifying, treating and curing breast cancer.
Latest breast cancer detection tool means better results
Early detection of breast cancer often relies on self and clinical breast exams in combination with regular mammograms. Recent improvements in technology provide healthcare professionals with a more advanced tool for breast cancer detection: breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3-D mammography.
Breast tomosynthesis provides a clearer, more accurate view
Breast tomosynthesis decreases the number of patients who need to return for additional imaging and unnecessary biopsies. The images provided by breast tomosynthesis remove tissue overlap that may hide breast cancer or create the impression that dense breast tissue is a tumor. Tomosynthesis provides a three-dimensional perspective that offers doctors a clearer, more accurate view than that of standard mammograms.
Comfort increases with new technology
Breast tomosynthesis machines take multiple pictures of each breast from many angles, with an x-ray tube that moves in an arc around the breast. The breast is positioned in the same way as a conventional mammogram, but the technician applies only enough pressure to keep the breast in a stable position during the procedure. Patients report more comfort compared to a traditional mammogram.
Breast cancer detection improved in women with dense breasts
Breast tomosynthesis improves breast cancer detection in women with dense breast tissue. 3-D mammography, used in conjunction with standard mammograms, increases breast cancer detection rates by more than 40 percent. Researchers recommend that breast tomosynthesis be used for women of all ages and breast densities.
