Helping Teens and Those Who Care About Them


What is TEENLINE?

TEENLINE is a comprehensive program providing a variety of mental health services for children, adolescents and their families. Our TEENLINE service includes:

PREVENTION

  • Workshops, presentations and trainings on a variety of mental health topics for parents, schools, community groups and businesses
  • Education in parenting skills
  • Availability of educational and training materials

INTERVENTION

  • 24-hour telephone helpline (717) 763-2345 or 1-800-722-5385
  • On-site mental health assessments provided to contracted schools
  • Mental health assessments provided at Holy Spirit Hospital’s Behavioral Health Center
  • Information and referral to all necessary medical, mental health, drug and alcohol, and social services
  • Co-facilitation of support groups for children and adolescents at risk

POSTVENTION

  • Assistance to area communities, schools and businesses following the death of an individual(s)
  • Grief counseling to individuals, groups and families

How is TEENLINE Connected to the Schools and Communities?

TEENLINE counselors work as mental health liaisons to the school’s Student Assistance Program (SAP) teams.The SAP teams consist of school personnel who are trained to identify and refer students who are experiencing barriers to learning and school success and may be at risk for mental health and/or drug and alcohol concerns. TEENLINE provides consultation regarding mental health concerns to school personnel, individuals and families, and other area professionals.

  • Decline in quality of school work

  • Alcohol and other drug abuse
  • Unusual neglect of personal appearance
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Sudden personality change

  • Direct verbal statement of threats of suicide, e.g. "I won't be around much longer."
  • Indirect verbal cues, e.g. "Everyone would be better off without me," "Life isn't worth living."
  • Previous suicide attempt, including minor gestures such as scratching wrists or taking mild overdoses.
  • Preoccupation with death, e.g. in reading, art, music, writing, conversations.
  • Purchase or questions about lethal methods which could indicate having a plan in mind.
  • Discontinuation or withdrawal from activities which have been important or pleasurable.
  • Giving away important possessions.
  • Risk-taking behavior, e.g. reckless driving, chemical abuse.
  • Sudden behavior change, e.g. insomnia, substance abuse, delinquency, etc.
  • Expression of feelings of hopelessness or helplessness.
  • Symptoms of depression.
