On April 1, 2014, there was a dramatic change in the way emergency services were provided in the areas around Dillsburg, Franklintown, and Wellsville. Citizens’ Hose Company No. 1 – Dillsburg Ambulance and West Shore EMS formed a partnership to provide advanced life support (ALS) on the Dillsburg ambulance. This reduced response times for those calls where a paramedic is needed. ALS calls are patients with chest pain (cardiac), trouble breathing (respiratory), allergic reactions, and major trauma. Before the partnership, the closest paramedic units responded from the Upper Allen Township Building or the Dover Township fire station. Now, a paramedic with the ALS equipment is on the Dillsburg ambulance 24 hours every day.

On Saturday, October 4, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Citizens’ Hose station, 109 S. Baltimore Street, both companies will be hosting an open house to show and educate the public about emergency responders in the Northern York area. There will be hands-on displays of basic and advanced medical equipment as well as fire and EMS vehicles. Participants can learn how easy it is to do American Heart Association Hands-only CPR and operate an automated external defibrillator. Carroll Township Police will be on hand to do child identification finger printing and provide information on identity theft prevention. The fire department will have informational tables. Weather permitting the Sparky Bounce House will be set up, too. Those visiting the open house can enjoy free hot dogs, water, snacks, and giveaways, as well as drawings for prizes donated by various businesses in the area. Please join us to learn about emergency services in our community.
